When the Lord Jesus said, “Take up your cross and follow Me”(Mtt.16:24), many people interpret ‘cross’ as some burden they must carry in their lives, such as poverty, strained relationship, failure, work-pressure, sickness and so on. With self-pitying pride, they say, “That’s my cross I have to carry.” Such an interpretation is not what Jesus meant when He said, “Take up your cross and follow Me.” When Jesus carried His cross up Golgotha to be crucified, no one was thinking of the cross as symbolic of a burden to carry. To a person in the first-century, the cross meant one thing only – painful and humiliating dead through crucifixion. Today, Christians view the cross as a cherished symbol of atonement, forgiveness, grace, and love. But in Jesus’ day, the cross represented torturous death. Because the Romans forced convicted criminals to carry their own crosses to the place of crucifixion; bearing a cross meant carrying their own execution device while facing ridicule along the way to death. Therefore, “Take up your cross and follow Me” means being willing to die in order to follow Jesus. This is called ‘dying to self.’ But instead of dying to self, some people try to follow Christ for self glory. Using their big mouths they exalt self at the cost of other disciples when they malign and slander them with exaggerated facts and incidents. But every action has its own reaction. As the scripture says, ‘he who dig a pit for others falls himself therein’. When they get trapped in their own trap, they will say ‘this is my cross’. Why carry a self-created pseudo cross? Today there are many believers getting burnt-out by carrying self created heavy cross. Many soldiers of Christ take voluntary retirement after fighting a wrong exhaustive battle. They glory themselves too much in civilian affairs for want of recognition; meanwhile some civilians also lure them with fluttery and apparent glory. This can happen to any group of people when they are no more absorbed into the Word of God. Be extremely careful when you are in God’s business! Wiser are those who do not invent another cross for the ministry, for here is the cross of Christ to carry, for which we are called. Many believers are carrying self-created cross today. Thus they are exhausted and burnt-out. Which cross are you carrying today? Beloved brethren, let us glory in the cross of Christ alone, no matter what the cost be. Following the Lord Jesus is easy when life runs smoothly, but our true commitment to Him is revealed during trials. Jesus made it clear that trials will come to His followers (Jn.16:33). Discipleship demands sacrifice, and the Lord never hid that cost. Today, how many people would respond to an altar call that goes, “Come follow the Lord Jesus, and you may face the loss of friends, family, reputation, career, and possibly even your life for the sake of Christ.”? Such a call is what Jesus meant when He said, “Take up your cross and follow me”.

My name is Charani Chackei, born and brought up in a Christian family. I have three sisters and two brothers. My parents are still alive by the grace of God. From my childhood I have a desire to go for theology and my aim in life was to become a missionary. When I was a child I was so regular in Sunday school. I was regular even in the church but one sad things is that I was not knowing about salvation. I thought that it was just a Christian ritual to go to church and pray. In my B.th 1st year only I came to know about salvation , from there I totally surrendered my life to God and I made a commitment that I will serve Him till my last breath.I did my M.Div in the year 2007. Right after my graduation I joined a church ministry working among the Children & Youth.I’m so happy to serve God through this UESI Ministry. I know that its God’s plan for me to serve Him in this manner. When I think of my life this scripture is very relevant for me - Jeremiah 1:5 says, ‘before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations’. Yes it is true before I knew Him, He knew me, before I chose Him, He chose me, before I love Him, He loved me.

Treasurer’s Sept 2010

Dear beloved in the Lord,

I bring greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I personally thank all of you for your tremendous support both financially, through prayers and through your day to day involvement with the students. I want to bring to your notice for your prayerful consideration towards the finance in the ministry. I know that there are lots of pressing needs in the local units. However we cannot overlook at the overall ministry in the Region and at the National level. This month our contribution was not as encouraging, and we are yet to reach the required amount of 2.35 lakhs (approximately) per month. I am happy to report that one EGF member from Arunachal Pradesh has sacrificially contributed Rs. 50,000/- for the purchase of one personal computer in the Center. I am happy that there are people in the ministry who feels the need and generously contribute towards infrastructure and also other needs. I request other gradutes also to kindly feel the same pulse and come forward. Just to inform all of us that most of our staffs in the North East are blessed with a two wheeler and able to function better from one place to another especially those based in a larger field. However, we are in urgent need of a two wheeler for our Sikkim Staff as his area of operation is big and he has to go from one place to another in a public transport which has a lot of inconvenience. All of these are infrastructure developments which are also important other than our monthly needs for staff salary, regional programmes, for office, miscellaneous, etc. Please share and pray about this with every concern and willing members in the ministry.

Staff Updates Sept 2010

Protul Bania: Visited AMC, Monkotta and Kaziranga for fellowship. He visited Tinsukia along with 4 students; able to work out with the St. Luke Hospital authority to have a camp. The camp is fixed from 1st to 3rd October 2010.

Poudikhon Pamei: Visited students and graduates for sharing, prayer and fellowship. Consecrated the New Committee Members of Mt. Zion EU which was formed on the 18th July 2010. Please pray for Imphal ICEU Autumn Bible Camp – 29th Sept to 4th Oct 2010 and Senapati ICEU retreat 2nd and 3rd Oct 2010.

Lanu Tzudir: Organized CMOP for four units i.e, Mt. Olive college EU, Law College EU, Oriental College EU and St.Joseph EU and participated as Resource Person. Took Bible exposition and devotion in the Camp Reunion of Kohima Sc. College EU on the theme “Keep your candle burning” Luke 12:35. Attended Maram Evangelistic Camp as Resource person, altogether 71 campers + organizers attended the camp. 50 campers committed their lives to the Lord, 17 campers rededicated their lives and 7 campers committed their lives for full time ministry.

Kornelius Basumatari: Conducted fasting prayer at Gangtok to intercede for God’s transformation in Sikkim. Visited Mangan, Dist. Head quarter of North Sikkim, met the Pastor and belivers there and introduced the UESI ministry to them. He will be visiting Mangan and Namchi on the 10th and 21st Oct. 2010 for pioneering work.

Moatoshi Imsong (ZS): Spoke in PBYF Senapati Evangelistic Camp from 12th to 16th Aug. He also had TRISCON Meeting with Patkai EGF on 18th Aug accompanied by national Staff Bro.Thomas Abraham(Chhatisgarh) and Bro. Jose Thomas (Chandigarh). Visited Mairang on 21st Aug, spoke in SSEU Evangelistic Trekking on 1st Sept, took Bible Study at Averine Hostel Shillong on 19th Sept. He also attended Zonal Secretaries consultation and training workshop at Kotagiri from 7th-12th Sept.2010

Alfred Valui will be doing his Internship with Pune EGF from April to November 2010.

NU-EU, Kohima had a successful Newspaper selling, project on 19th June 2010. They also had Discipleship Training Camp held from 24th – 27th June 2010 at Shalom Bible Seminary; Outreach programme to Mount Olive college on 25th August, 2010; Consecration programme on 27 Aug 10; Prayer and fasting programme on 5th Sept 10.

SSEU, Shillong had a successful food fest that was held on the 13th July 2010; Committee Outing on the 14th August 2010; Evangelistic Trekking on the 29 August 2010; Mission Sunday on the 29 Aug 2010. Pray for their upcoming Discipleship Camp at CASA centre from 20th to 25th October 2010. Pray for their financial needs, leaders, campers and speakers. The speakers will be Bro. Moatoshi Imsong (ZS), Bro. Lanu Tzudir and Bro. C. Cajee.

Pachhunga University EU Choir performed on the PUC Foundation Day function on 13th August 2010 at Aizawl.

Aizawl ICEU visited Pachhunga University EU on 6th July 2010 along with Staff-worker Sis. Amulyn Lyngdoh. The AICEU Song Book was also released on this day.

Dimapur ICEU will be having its Evangelistic Camp from 8th – 10th October 2010. Bro. Moatoshi Imsong (ZS) will the Speaker besides local graduates.

Govt. Aizawl college EU had a successful fundraising during their college week from 2nd -6th August 2010.

Mizoram EGF visited Govt. Aizawl College on 8th August, and Govt. West College on 31st August.

Japfu Christian College EU will be having its Evangelistic camp from 15th-20th October 2010. Bro. Moatoshi Imsong (ZS) will be speaking in the camp.

UESI-NE Staff Workers had a consultative meeting on Vision 2020- strategic directives of UESI-NE at Shillong on 1st Sept.2010.

UESI PRAYER DAY was observed on 2nd October 2010 all over the Country.

Nagaland EGF Conference was held at Dimapur from 1st to 3rd Oct. 2010. Rev. Malsawma was the Speaker.

Graduates consultation Programme

UESI National Graduates Ministry Deptt. Secy Bro. John Lazarus and his wife Manjula toured the northeast region from 10th – 24th Sept. for graduates consultative programme. They are based in Hydreabad at present. They met with graduates in pocket places like Dimapur, Kohima, Senapati, Imphal, Churachandpur, Kaziranga, Shillong and Naharlagun. The discussions were centered around the vision and role of graduates in the students ministry. It was a blessed time as those who attended the programme went back with great motivation for the ministry work. Thanks to Bro. Lazarus and Sis. Manjula for the valuable investment in the region. They even had to face a bus accident on their way to Naharlagun, but the gracious hand of God protected them. Thanks to Sis. Awon Shanglai (Secretary, Graduates Ministry deptt., UESI-NE) for planning and coordinating the programme, and leading the couple in the tour.

A Pastor was once baptizing a young gentleman. The young man interrupted the Pastor saying, “Sir, wait a second. Let me first keep my money purse out”. The Pastor replied, “Son, unless your purse is also in, I cannot baptize you”. Giving has become a sore spot for many Christians. Everyday we are bombarded with appeals for money – from television and radio evangelists, from missionaries, from parachurch organizations, from relief agencies and from our own churches. Sometime people get fed up. But let me ask you this simple question – “Is your purse baptized?” One EGF man said, “Your spirituality is measured by the way you give”. Once one of our Graduate met his old time EU friend on a busy street after long years. He straightaway asked his friend, “Are you giving to UESI?” When his friend replied, “No”, he shouted “Shame on you!” UESI ministry begun with the sacrificial giving of great man of God like Prof. H. Enoch, who once told a Staff- worker (PT Chandapilla), “As long as there is a morsel of food in my house, you shall not go hungry”. I pray that such commitment will continue down the generation. Last month our Staff-workers were paid only 88% of their salary due to receipt of less contribution. I do not call this as deficit. Deficit is not my word. Whatever the Lord provide is sufficient. However, we lose a lot when we do not give. The ministry will keep growing even without a single paisa. But the sad part is that we lose the privilege of participating in God’s mission with our money. Some of us may be wondering what is Christian giving? Giving is worship. It is an outward expression of our love to God. Giving is also sowing. Its wiser to sow generously, not sparingly. Giving is also an investment. It is a privilege. Who should give? Each one should give. No one is excluded – haves or haves not. No one is too poor to give nothing to God or to fellow men. What to give? Give yourself first, as a living sacrifice. Your wealth – money, crops, materials, and anything that can be useful. Your talents, gifts and availability. How much to give? The answer is ‘how much you still have?’ Do not be stingy in giving to God and His people. As you decides in your heart. Give what you have. God does not expect us to give what we don’t have. Be generous in giving. No one has ever suffered because of giving, but on the other hand, people suffer because they don’t give. How to give? Give consistently, systematically as tithe, free will offering, thanks giving, alms, and so on. Why should we give? Giving draws us closer to God, and we grow spiritually. The Levites are to dedicate themselves to the ministry of the Lord. They will not divert their attention with earning. So the people must give so that the Levites will have enough means of living. Tithe is not ours, it belongs to God. In the strict sense, paying tithe is not giving. It is just paying God’s own share. So our giving must go beyond tithe. Whatever you have is not yours. So its foolishness not to give when you are there as a steward of the wealth in your hand. Being a miser is a sin. “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the LORD Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty” (Malachi 3:8- 12). Christian giving is God’s will. Oh, how blessed it is to do God’s will!

Treasurer’s Letter March 2010

Dear beloved in the Lord,

I bring greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
With much burden, I report here that this months’ contribution has not been encouraging. We even had to settle the staff salary to a mere 88% percent of what we usually give. At a time such as this, I am still hopeful that God, who is able, will cause us to rise on the occasion as surely as we did in the days that have gone by. I only want to remind all of us, that:
Firstly our giving should demonstrate Love and not Law: God has never looked to the world to support His work. He has always looked to His people. Our giving should be an act of love and gratitude on the part of His people and not the keeping of a law. Under the Law of Moses, Israel was required to give a tenth of their income. In the New Testament we do not find anyone giving less than ten percent, but we find some who gave half or even all they had. They were not giving by law, but by love. We remember out of Love, Zacchaeus gave half (Luke 19:8) and out that same love for the Lord, the poor widow gave her all (Luke 21:3-4)
Secondly, Our Giving should be Systematic and Proportionate: When I say that giving should be systematic, I mean that it should be done on a regular basis – on a specific time. When I say that giving should be proportionate, I mean that it should be a certain part of our income. That means that our giving must be planned ahead of time in our heart. We must decide how much we will give and how often we will give it . The Bible says Giving is to be regular (I Corinthians 16:2), Giving should be from the heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).

I therefore call upon each one of us to be faithful in the little that God has given us, for He expects us to give what we have and not what we don’t have. I want to remind all of you that our monthly need is 2.15 lakhs (Approximately).

I urge all of you reading this to share and sincerely pray with all willing members of our family for the Lord’s work in the days ahead.

Dear UESI-NE friends,

It is with great joy & thanksgiving to the Lord that I send my greetings & Congratulations to you as you celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the UESI in NE India!

I well remember the early days when the numbers were small, & this new organization was not very welcome, but because it was planted on the living Word of God, the Lord blessed, and students responded to His Call. Now from that very small beginning it has been encouraging to hear how the work has grown with staff,& outreach to many new parts of the country.

I believe that the Lord wants even more areas to be entered & for many unreached areas in the N.E. to be won for the Kingdom through the students & graduates of the UESI.So move forward guided by His Word, His Spirit& by His power to serve & glorify Him.

“How good is the God we adore,
Our faithful, Unchangeable Friend,
Whose Love is as great as His Power,
And knows neither measure nor end.
’Tis Jesus the First & the Last,
Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home,
We’ll PRAISE Him for all that is PAST,
And TRUST HiM for all that’s To COME!
